Mattress shopping Goldilocks

Posted in Uncategorized on May 22, 2013 by crystalake

Having suffered big time with back ache last year, I purchased a new mattress.

I went in adamant that I needed a firm supportive mattress but they had me testing out the mattresses like Goldilocks, ‘far too hard’, ‘far too soft’…until I found the one that felt ‘just right’.

They then told me not to make a decision yet, they brought me a blanket, a pillow and a bottle of water and told me to have a nap for half an hour. A li’l embarrassed by the prospect of taking a nap in the showroom, I soon relaxed and and now that that mattress is coming home with me…

SCIENTIFIC EXPERTS globally are predicting and expecting that 2 years from now, all life on Earth may well come to an end. Some are saying it’ll be we humans that would set it off. Others believe that a natural disasterous phenomenon will be the cause. And the religious folks are saying it’ll be God himself who would press the stop and restart button. The following are some likely arguments as to why the world would end by the year 2015. Go through them and leave your view in comments.
Reason one: Mayan calendar
The first to predict 2015 as the end of the world were the Mayans, a bloodthirsty race that were good at two things — building highly accurate astrological equipment out of stone and sacrificing virgins.
Thousands of years ago they managed to calculate the length of the lunar moon as 329.53020 days, only 34 seconds out. The Mayan calendar predicts that the earth will end on MAY 15, 2015. Given that they were pretty close to the mark with the lunar cycle, it’s likely they’ve got the end of the world right as well.
Reason two: Sun storms
Solar experts from around the world monitoring the sun have made a startling discovery. Our sun is in a bit of strife. The energy output of the sun is, like most things in nature, cyclic and it’s supposed to be in the middle of a period of relative stability. However, recent solar storms have been bombarding the earth with lot of radiation energy. It’s been knocking out power grids and destroying satellites. This activity is predicted to get worse and calculations suggest it’ll reach its deadly peak sometime in 2015.
Reason three: The atom smasher
Scientists in Europe have been building the world’s largest particle accelerator. Basically, its a 27 km tunnel designed to smash atoms together to find out what makes the universe tick. However, the mega-gadget has caused serious concern, with some scientists suggesting that it’s properly even a bad idea to turn it on in the first place. They’re predicting all manner of deadly results, including mini black holes. So when this machine is fired up for its first serious experiment in 2015, the world could be crushed into a super-dense blob the size of a basketball.
Reason four: The Bible says it
If having scientists warning us about the end of the world isn’t bad enough, religious folks are getting in on the act as well. Interpretations of the Christian Bible reveal that the date for Armageddon, the final battle between good an evil, has been set for 2015. The I Ching, also known as the Chinese Book of Changes, says the same thing, as do various sections of the Hindu teachings.
Reason five: Super volcano
Yellowstone National Park in United States is famous for its thermal springs and old faithful geyser. The reason for this is simple — it’s sitting on top of the world’s biggest volcano and geological experts are beginning to get nervous sweats. The Yellowstone volcano has a pattern of erupting every 650,000 years or so, and we’re many years overdue for an explosion that will fill the atmosphere with ash, blocking the sun and plunging the earth into a frozen winter that could last up to 15,000 years. The pressure under the Yellowstone is building steadily, and geologists have set 2015 as a likely date for the big bang.
Reason six: The physicists
This one’s case of bog — simple maths mathematics. Physicists at Berkely University have been crunching the numbers. They’ve determined that the earth is well overdue for a major catastrophic event. Even worse, they’re claiming that their calculations prove that we’re all going to die, very soon. They are also saying that their prediction comes with a certainty of 99 per cent; and 2015 just happens to be the best guess as to when it occurs.
Reason seven: Earth’s magnetic field
We all know the Earth is surrounded by a magnetic field that shields us from most of the sun’s radiation. What you might not know is that the magnetic poles we call North and South have a nasty habit of swapping places every 750,000 years or so — and right now we’re about 30,000 years overdue. Scientists have noted that the poles are drifting apart roughly 20-30 kms each year, much faster than ever before, which points to a pole-shift being right around the corner. While the pole shift is under way, the magnetic field is disrupted and will eventually disappear, sometimes for up to 100 years. The result is enough UV outdoors to crisp your skin in seconds, killing everything it touches

Volunteers Are Needed For A One Way Ticket To Mars

Posted in Uncategorized on May 20, 2013 by crystalake

Mars One, a Dutch company planning on a one-way trip to Mars to start a colony there and film a reality show, has begun its search for volunteers to live the rest of their days out on the Red Planet.

Mars One’s CEO Bas Lansdorp announced at a press conference in New York City on Monday an open call for anyone to apply for the trip, under the condition they understand that there will not be a return trip.

“Today, the Mars One foundation starts the search for Mars inhabitants. The search for people from all nations who want to settle on Mars. Mars One is a non profit organization that is working on landing the first crew on Mars in 2023 and another crew every two years after that,” Lansdorp said.

The goal is to send four astronauts to Mars in order to establish a human colony on the planet fourth closest to the Sun.

In addition, the whole mission would be streamed on the internet with a viewing audience as large as 4 billion people.

Applicants must be between 18-40 years of age and in good physical condition. Requirements include good people and survival skills and a solid understanding of the English language.

Mars One would then send a new crew every two years, each flight carry two males and two females.

Reflection : Pain that is too great to bear

Posted in Uncategorized on May 20, 2013 by crystalake

From her early stardom in Emma (1996), to her breakthrough success in Shakespeare in Love (1998) and her singing debut in Duets (2000), Paltrow has managed to maintain a certain grace while living her adult life in front of the cameras.

The death of her father, who produced and directed the landmark TV hospital drama St. Elsewhere, shook her world. In October 2002, the family thought his cancer was at bay, and he went to Rome to celebrate Gwyneth’s 30th birthday.  But he began feeling sick.

“We got him to the hospital and he didn’t make it through the first night, because the cancer had come back,” Paltrow said. “It was in his bronchial tubes, which we didn’t know. None of us knew, including him, thank God.”

She thinks it is a blessing that her father did not know how sick he was.

“Because he would have faced a few really miserable months and I don’t know, I think there’s something kind of elegant and great about dying in Rome,” she said.

But the grieving period was extremely difficult for Paltrow. The young actress said she couldn’t believe she was able to wake up and function each day while feeling such pain.

But her father had really wanted her to make the Sylvia Plath film, so just two weeks after his death, Paltrow started work on Sylvia, the story of the poet who struggled through a rocky marriage before committing suicide.

Paltrow says she poured her own grief into the role.

“She was this woman in the ’50s and she was trying to be everything that a woman in the ’50s was supposed to be,” Paltrow said. “A wife and a mother, and a baker and a sewer and an organizer. And she was also most importantly this incredibly complicated, cracked spirit.”

There was someone else in the movie who had to work through heartbreak, too: Gwyneth Paltrow’s mother, actress Blythe Danner, who plays Plath’s mother.

Paltrow said she wants so much to see her mother heal.

“I would just love her to have some peace and — you know she’s had — we’ve all had such a difficult time with it,” Paltrow said. “She’s so incredible and she’s such a beautiful woman and she’s so full of life. And she’s in so much pain. So I hope that sort of subsides.”

Paltrow is now left with a perspective that only comes with facing the harsh realities of death.

“The amazing thing is how unprepared we are in this culture for grief. I mean, no one talks about it and it is a monster,” she said.

“I had crazy things happen to me, like I woke up probably a week or so after he died and all of the muscles around my rib cage were in spasm. I couldn’t breathe…. There were some days where I thought ‘I can’t believe I’m waking up. I can’t believe I’m still alive.’ I mean, the weight of the pain was so great …”

“But you just keep waking up.”

Crystalake :

The hardest thing is to say goodbye to loved ones, whether through breakup or death. She suffered both types of pain. I cannot take such pain too.

I understand this part : “all of the muscles around my rib cage were in spasm. I couldn’t breathe”. It was like a heart attack, when you tried to breathe, it was so painful, like the heart attack signs. I felt her pain too.

I cannot imagine the suffering of the family who lost their son in Greece. If I were the mother, how would I go through each day? It would be so so so painful. I think I may be so sad that I would slowly lose my health and be gone. How to bear huge emotional pains? How to love pets which have shorter life spans?

When you are in the business long enough, even the dead would appear in your dreams to tell you who the murderer is. That is when you can call yourself an expert in this field.

Crystalake : Thai Buddhist Amulet

Posted in Uncategorized on May 6, 2013 by crystalake

I have heard about its perceived strength, and this is usually one of the goals in a Thailand trip besides their fabulous shopping (Hangover 3!!!). It has to be chanted by the monk to be effective, and one just donates an amount to the temple. Till today, I seldom see cars with these amulets getting into accidents. Or it could be I am not aware of the rest. I heard that one has to treat it with respect, and should not put in trousers pocket as it is considered under the belt.
